ARTIST STATEMENT

Martha's work stems from her obsession with space, colour and the drawn line. At university she studied Art for Public space and majored in ceramics and drawing. Her work has lead her to a public art commissions at Chelsea and Westminster hospital and many different community art projects in London.
Her work has largely been based on creating space and the concept of ‘The Space That Can Hold’ both practically and conceptually. A majority of her work is clay and three-dimensional. In creating a physical space from clay she then uses the surface of the work to explore different marks, textures and colours - dividing areas up and connecting areas through line. Much of Martha's inspirations stems from the drawn line and its ability do create and divide space. By drawing onto the surface of the work she aims to create a new relationship between the physical space of the piece, its surface, and the connection the viewer has to it. She thrives on being able to create space within space.
More recently Martha has also been working on painting and drawing. Still focusing on 'Created Space' It has forced her to focus solely on creating space through line and colour with out the three dimensional element.
